Black Light has been popular for a long time. You can see them used in the most varied of locations, from bars, to space craft manufacturers. Risk Reactor carries a full line of industrial strength black lights as well as an array of handheld portables. |
Our clients include government agencies such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory, military, schools, businesses, and people like you! Welcome to our black light information section.
We carry everything from battery operated black lights, to plug in fixtures. The battery operated blacklites are perfect for outside and mobile applications.
What Is Black Light?
The word "black light" is the popular name for near-ultraviolet radiant energy, which falls just outside the visible spectrum. When the light hits fluorescent materials, it makes them "fluoresce" or emit visible light. What actually occurs is a conversion of energy. The black light, which is invisible, will hit a fluorescent surface and is absorbed and re-radiated at a longer wavelengths in the visibility range of the human eye.
Do I need regulated output?
If you have a requirement for?
- consistent UV output power over the life or charge of the batteries?
- or a requirement for reproducibility?
Then a regulated model with a -RG in the part number is what you are looking for. Part numbers like BC7HF390-RG, BC7HF390-EU-RG, BC7HF390W-RG, BC7HF390W-EU-RG, BC7HF405-RG, BC7HF405-EU-RG, BC7CRIME-RG, BC7CRIME-RG-365 Non-regulated models are very bright with fresh batteries, but as the batteries discharge, the output will decrease. The advantage of regulated modules is consistent output conversely, the advantage of non-regulated modules is that many more hours of usable output can be obtained from a single set of batteries. This might be more important in the field, but it is a trade-off worth considering for your application.

How Is It Used?
Black light makes possible beautiful, unusual and dramatic effects. It may be used in a great many ways for decorative and artistic purposes, for advertising and displays. Ultra violet light is used in the theater, by artists, in insepection departments for quality control of manufactured parts and raw materials, for military purposes, and for many industrial applications too numerous to mention.
Black light (UV lamps) can be used in conjunction with fluorescent material or phosphorescent materials. The fluorescent materials re-radiate the energy while the black light is on it while phosphorescent material will re-emit light long after the black light is out. Each material, the fluorescent and phosphorescent, has a particular purpose and effect. A combination of the two could produce even more incredible effects and create new applications not thought of yet.
Black light fluorescent inspection processes make working life easier for quality control engineers, forensic scientists, fire officers, leak detectors, etc. using Risk Reactor's tracers and black lights. Under Risk Reactor black light, hairline cracks can be detected in aircraft undercarriages, automotive steering systems and many other life-critical components. In the field of forensics Blacklight helps discover vital evidence at crime scenes and plays an important role in identifying the cause of fires. The inspection of works of art under UV black light is a means of revealing imperfections and evidences of restoration, an important aspect of authentication for valuation and sale.
Black light and fluorescent materials are used in the following applications:
-
Risk Reactor UV Tracers such as the IFWB series.
-
Invisible Inks such as the IFPAP, IF2, MAR-C0, etc.
-
Military Applications.
-
Science projects.
-
Air conditioner and other leak detection.
-
Stage Props and Scenery.
-
Signs.
-
UV nail curing
-
Parties.
-
Police Crime Laboratories.
-
Theatrical.
-
Costumes.
-
Ice Shows.
-

-
Window Displays.
-
Posters.
-
Counterfeit money detection.
-
Glass curing.
-
Fluorescent Minerals.
-
Conformal Coatings and other industrial applications.
Use Risk Reactor's invisible fluorescent tracers in combination with black lights to check for vagrant glue in cabinet work, signal flags, police work, analysis of textiles and yarns, fish lures, fluorescent writing inks, and typewriter ribbons.
Crime Scene Use of Black Lights.
Risk Reactor Crime Scene Black Lights (Ultraviolet) are for close examination of the crime scene to expose evidence not visible under normal lighting or to the naked eye.
UV responsive evidence can not hide from our ultra violet blacklights. Various wavelengths of Ultra Violet energy reveals hidden blood, fingerprints, fibers, and subcutaneous bruises on living and/or dead bodies.
Risk Reactor’s Orange viewing goggles UVGLASS1 are used with UV Black lights to enhance the contrast of stains, fluorescent fingerprint powder, UV responsive fibers, and body fluids of different types. The UVGLASS1 orange goggles come with the kits and can be purchased by themselves.
Sources of Black Light.
The most important sources of black light are the Black Light Tubular Fluorescent lamps and Mercury-Arc lamps. They are available in all shapes and sizes to meet nearly every requirement. The Mercury-Arc lamps are the most powerful source of black light. They are compact and readily adaptable to optical control. The fluorescent tubes are the most efficient source of black light. All black light sources require the use of transformers or ballasts as they operate on different voltages than incandescent lamps.
Risk Reactor products have a range of wavelengths, features, and prices to suit any need. It might be confusing knowing which flashlight is best suited for your specific application. If you have a need for a UV flashlight, then you can choose between a single wavelength models or one that has selectable wavelengths. When the wavelength decreases you will get two things. First, the contrast is improved and second the price of the LEDs increases pretty steeply. If you have a wavelength specification from the supplier of a dye product, then follow their recommendation and let us know what that is so we can help. The more LEDs, the more UV power is emitted (with the exception of the super xLamp models, where each LED die is very powerful by itself). For applications where you require multiple wavelengths in one unit, for example white, blue, and ultraviolet, then look at our multi-wavelength selectable units or send us your requirement specifications.
What is the difference between the bulb types?
There are two different factors in the bulb and there for the light cost. First is the wavelength. The lower the nm (Wavelength) usually the more cost in manufacturing such as 365 nm. 254 nm, which is short wave, is a lot more. Secondly, more intensity of the wavelength the higher the cost will be. These days has really spawned some great innovation creating high flux emitters which blows away traditional LEDs.
Does 365nm pick-up / show invisible ink etc... more intensely than 380-385nm versions?
Depends on the color. All Clear Blues Invisible Inks and Paints can be seen with a wide range of UV 360-395 nm. The Clear Reds and Clear Yellow Invisible UV Inks require closer to 365 nm. So if you are using the MAR-C0 Invisible Blue Pen you can use just about any of our Black Lights and UV LEDs. For the Clear Red you will need a 365 nm such as the BMAG-365.
Do the higher nm bulbs pump out more visible light thus interfering with the potential intensity of the items you are trying to fluoresce?
Yes. In the case of using Clear Blue Invisible Inks and Paints then 385 nm to 390 nm is fine for a strong response. If you want more contrast then yes, 365 nm is what you want.
How far away can the Black lights be from a fluorescing surface before it will "light it up?"
That all depends on a few factors. How bright is the UV responsive surface is, how dark is the area of inspection, and the type of black light.
I'm trying to make sure I get the right wavelength and strength of flashlight to light up invisible ink markers with the greatest amount of visibility and least amount of bleach-out due to the light itself.
To determine what light and wavelength you want review the application. Invisible Inks come in many colors. All Clear Blues can be seen with any of our UV Lights. All visible Paints and Pigments can be seen with any of the lights as well. The higher the nm you will get more of that “flushed-out” or “bleached-out” effect. But if you are using the MAR-C0 Invisible Blue Pen, which can be used with any of the lights, then 365 nm lights would give the largest visible difference but most clients use the 395 Lantern in large inspection area applications.
